October 16, 2000, New York City - Gideon Rose has been appointed Managing Editor of Foreign Affairs magazine, it was announced Monday. He will assume the post December first, succeeding Fareed Zakaria who has joined Newsweek as editor of the international edition and columnist.

James Hoge, editor of Foreign Affairs, said that Rose "brings to the job a wealth of knowledge about international issues and solid editing experience."

Rose has been Deputy Director of National Security Studies and Olin Senior Fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations. He has also served as Senior Editor of the magazine for the past eight months.
In 1994-1995, Rose served as Associate Director for Near East and South Asian Affairs on the National Security Council, as National Security Fellow of the John M. Olin Institute for Strategic Studies at Harvard University.
In 1996-97, he lectured on American foreign policy in the Department of Politics at Princeton University and in 1998–99 he taught the same subject as an adjunct professor at the School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University.

From 1985 through 1987, Rose served successively as assistant editor of the foreign policy quarterly, The National Interest, and the domestic quarterly, The Public Interest.
He has written essays on foreign and security policy in Foreign Affairs, International Security, The National Interest, and World Politics as well as op-ed columns for leading newspapers.

Rose received a Ph.D. from the Department of Government at Harvard University and a B.A. in Classics from Yale University.
