October 26, 2004—Council Fellow and Pulitzer Prize-winner Laurie Garrett was one of the individuals recognized by Bailey House, New York’s oldest AIDS housing organization, as being instrumental in the fight against the AIDS epidemic.

At its 20th anniversary gala, Bailey House recognized twenty foundations, corporations, and individuals that have made a significant contribution to the fight against AIDS through their support of Bailey House, with “20 for 20” Key Awards.

“Over the last two decades, Bailey House has helped thousands of people with AIDS find the housing and services they need to live healthier and longer lives,” said Regina R. Quattrochi, Bailey House CEO. “This is our way to honor those who have contributed their time, energy and resources to the AIDS housing movement both here in New York and across the country.”

Garrett is one of America’s most distinguished science journalists. She is the only person ever to be awarded all three of the major prizes in journalism: the Peabody, the Polk (twice), and the Pulitzer (for which she has also been a finalist three times). She has also been honored three times by the Overseas Press Club of America. While at the Council, Garrett will complete a book on emerging diseases and global security (to be published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux) and launch a project on global health issues such as HIV/AIDS, epidemic diseases, and bioterrorism.

Bailey House, originally named the AIDS Resource Center, was the first organization in New York City to specifically address housing for homeless people living with AIDS. Today, Bailey House’s mission has changed from helping people with AIDS die in dignity, to empowering people with HIV/AIDS to achieve their fullest potential through the development and provision of housing and other vital services such as vocational education and substance abuse counseling.
